Community
Olpe is a small town located 10 miles south of Emporia, Kansas. Our city was named after Olpe, Germany, the hometown of some of the early settlers here. The community has a rich German heritage, and many of current residents are of German descent.
At the time of the 2000 census, there were 504 people within the city of Olpe. Our community is growing, with several new homes being built in the past few years. Olpe is a short drive from Emporia, where many residents work, but still provides the small-town atmosphere that many families prefer.
There are several active community organizations in Olpe, including the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, 4-H Clubs, and a volunteer Fire Department. Olpe has two churches, St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Olpe United Methodist Church. Also, Ebenezeer United Methodist Church is located a few miles west of town.
In addition to the public schools, we have St. Joseph's Elementary School, a parochial school that serves preschool through 6th grade. In 7th grade, the students from St. Joseph's begin attending Olpe Jr. High along with students from Olpe Elementary.
