Award Winning Books

Books become award winners for many reasons. Sometimes adults pick them for the author's or illustrator's skills or because the topic is an important one for students to learn about. And sometimes, kids get to pick their favorite.

This award was started in 1952 and is named after William Allen White, a famous journalist and author from Emporia, KS. The winners are selected each April by Kansas school children via popular vote.

The awards ceremony is held the first Saturday in October in Emporia. The link above will provide information on how you can participate in the celebration.


Bill Martin, Jr. Picture Book Award

Bill Martin, Jr. has been a Kansas teacher, a principal, and an author. The Kansas Reading Association started this award in 1996 for outstanding picture books.


Newbery Medal

Learn about the Newbery Medal

The Association of Library Services to Children awards this medal each year to the author whose book is a valuable contribution to children's literature. It is named for John Newbery, a bookseller from England who lived in the 1700's. This award started in 1922.


Caldecott Medal

Learn about the Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Award began in 1938. It is given every year to the best new picture book in America. The Association of Library Services to Children gives this award.
