Citing Your Sources

What is a citation? A citation is simply the name of the source where you found the information you used in your school assignment.

Why do I need to give citations on my work? Giving citations to tell where you found your information shows two things: 1. You did your research (& now others can find that information, too); & 2. You are honest about how much you know and how much you learned.
But most important, the person whose work you used to learn new information deserves to receive credit for providing that information.

How do I write a citation? This depends upon which grade you are in. In elementary school, each grade level will write citations a little differently. As you move from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade, you will be required to give more information each year. By the time you finish Sixth Grade, you should be able to record all required parts of a citation.
Below are basic guidelines for the information you need to include in your citations.

Kindergarten
The type of source. For example, a magazine or a book.

First
The title of the source. For example, Big Cats .

Second
The title of the source & the author or creator. For example, Big Cats by Seymour Simon.

Third
The title, the author, & the date of publication or creation. For example, Big Cats by Seymour Simon, 1991.

Fourth
The title, author, publication date, publisher and place of publication. For example, Big Cats by Seymour Simon, 1991, HarperCollins, USA.

Fifth
The title, author, publication date, & place of publication with correct punctuation & in alphabetical order. You will also be introduced to citing on-line sources, which include web pages and databases.

Sixth
All necessary elements of a citation given in correct order with proper punctuation. This includes books, periodicals, videos, encyclopedias, interviews, and internet sources.
